DVD-processors ESS ES4318, ES4408, ES4408FD




Chip ES4318, ES4408, ES4408FD are the basis for the construction of
domestic DVD-players. High degree of integration, programmable
architecture, high quality signal processing and low cost allow vehicles
that meet modern quality requirements.
Chips are built on high-performance 32-bit RISC-processor, which
provides decoding and processing the input data stream from the
DVD-drive, he also serves as the system controller. Software chip can be
expanded by connecting an external ROM. For processing the decoded
video chips used in built-in filters and converters, forming a high
quality image of the specified format. A variety of recording formats,
the image makes such an option is particularly important (for example,
to display the DVD-movie in the PAL, recorded in the NTSC). Output image
is formed in a form suitable for use with a wide range of decoders PAL
and NTSC. Sound signals are output circuits in two ways - decoded (ready
for immediate conversion to an analog signal by DAC) and in the form of
raw digital stream (audio stream read from disk). To send the decoded
audio data interface is used I2S, and to transmit the raw
audio stream - interface S / PDIF. these chips also implemented a broad
set of interface functions, which include the decoding of remote control
commands (from the IR receiver) and support functions of the control
keypad. Block diagram of the connection DVD-ESS series processors ES4xx8

The main functions and features of DVD-processor ES4318:
- Completed in 208-pin PQFP;
- Full support for decoding MPEG-1 and MPEG-2;
- Programmable architecture;
- Disc formats: DVD-Video, Audio CD, Video CD (VCD, VCD 2.0), Super Video CD (SVCD);
- Support System DVD Navigation 1.0;
- Decoding the zone of protection (CSS).
Image processing functions:
- Convert image format "Pan & Scan" and "Letterbox";
- Technology SmartZoom, providing the ability to scale and pan the image;
- Technology SmartScale, allowing to make transformation of systems of color television (eg, NTSC to PAL, etc.);
- SmartStream technology for error correction data read from disk in real time;
- Play modes: slow, fast forward, rewind, frame by frame and the transition to a given piece;
- Supporting functions for karaoke and subtitles;
- On Screen Display (OSD) in the palette of 16 colors, blending function with 16 degrees of transparency;
- 8-bit component output in the format of YUV.
Sound Processing Functions:
- Decode Dolby Digital streams in dual-stream PCM;
- Decoder Dolby Pro Logic;
- Support for PCM streams up to 24 bit/96 kHz;
- Simultaneous operation of the digital stereo output and the interface S / PDIF;
- Built-in support for technology Sensaura Dolby Digital Virtual Surround;
- S / PDIF output for audio stream AC-3, DTS Digital and Linear PCM.
Interface functions:
- Two interfaces to connect my DVD-drive: ATAPI or A / V bus;
- Bi-directional serial digital audio interface I2S;
- Direct control of the drive read the disc;
- Eight Multifunction I / O ports;
- A single clock frequency 27 MHz;
- Support for up to 2 Mbytes of memory types SDRAM.
IC ES4408
Most of the characteristics of the chip ES4408 coincide with the
characteristics of chip ES4318. In contrast to the previous chip ES4408
has advanced features audio processing:
- Decoding streams in six-channel Dolby Digital audio stream format PCM;
- Multi-channel decoding of MPEG audio stream in PCM.
In addition, the interface chip can connect to it to 4 MB of SDRAM memory or EDO DRAM.
IC ES4408FD differs from ES4408 decoder built a DTS audio streams and supports up to 8 MB RAM Type SDRAM.
